New Ethanol Studies: Little Effect on Gas Prices, Significant Pressure on Food

Two studies released today show that federal ethanol mandates have placed significant pressure on food prices, while any effect on gasoline prices has been "almost too
small to measure."

Ethanol is good for domesticating our energy resources. It is fairly convenient as well... unlike solar or wind, you just dump it into a gas tank and don't have to engineer much.

Other than that, it's really not any cheaper or cleaner than gasoline. Limited advantages at best (unless you're a senator from Iowa and will thus tout it as the greatest scientific breakthrough of our time).

EZ, the problem with battery powered cars is that they use electricity that's generated from coal fired power plants. it's not a free ride. if we did a 100% changeover the power grid would collapse without significant upgrades and increase in capacity. that's why i said that the problem must be solved by attacking it from every angle.

BTW, i agree that drilling alone would not solve our problem...but it IS a part of the solution. better a few polar bears and caribou die than the millions of people who would die if we jacked up prices on food exports

Doug, The people wouldn't have to starve to death. Its the oil countries choice to make. Lower the oil prices. Or let your people starve to death. It really isn't very complicated. We could last far longer than them without oil than them food. I know i know. You now say its not the average person of those countries making the oil prices. But in the end it will be there country deciding if they live or die. By either lowering prices. Or not doing so and suffering the consequences. It would really be there choice. It's time to show them they don't have us by the nuts as they think. Just my opinion of course.

OIL prices "will not come down," OPEC president Chakib Khelil said today,
"OPEC has already done what OPEC can do and prices will not come down," Mr Khelil said as he arrived for a meeting with EU energy officials in Brussels.

LOL he wouldn't give me the time of day!! I realize my idea will never happen. We'll let our own people suffer and go into financial ruin over this. Before using food as a weapon. I realize the Arabs are trying to get EVERY fcking penny they can out of there oil before it runs dry. When there oil does run dry. They'll eventually become the desolate dust bowl they once were. Sure it won't be in my lifetime. But it WILL happen. There oil will run dry. Eventually they'll spend all the $ they made from the oil. There inflated population won't be able to support itself without oil. They'll start to starve and become sick. Then who will come running to the rescue?? Who will EVERYONE in the world expect to save all the there people from ruin?? It will end up being us. After we do our good deeds and a few years pass by. When we again do something Europeans or whoever don't agree with. We'll be critisized and hated once again. As we are now. All of Europe would be speaking German if it wasn't for us. Hundreds of thousands of our men died helping them. But they'll critisize us now while trying to help and do the right thing for some other people of the world. If China turned into a aggressive rouge state. They'd roll over Europe in a matter of months. Who would Europe turn to? Us as usual. We would save there asses and in a matter of years. After we did something they don't agree with. Back to the hate again. The opinions some of these foreigners have about the US, bush etc make me want to vomit. There is absolutely no appreciation for all the good we do for the world. Just critisism. Thats part of the reason I've come to the point about how I feel about the food vs oil theory. Why should we play nice? There going to hate us regardless.
