VP Candidate Sarah Palin's 17 year old daughter is pregnant.
She apparently is going to keep the baby and marry the father. She will, of course, follow the family tradition and name it Election.

The funny part of this - Sarah Palin is big on the "family values" platform, which includes abstinence as sex education.

I don't see any of it as funny...perhaps ironic, but not funny.

And election would be a better name than at least a couple that immediately come to mind

My parents were huge advocates of abstinence. I got pregnant when I was 16. My decision to have sex had nothing to do with my parents and their values. Some people fail to see that children/teens will do what they want to do, regardless of what they have been taught. It's the young mentality of "nothing bad will ever happen to me". My actions don't reflect on what my parents tried to teach me. I chose to make my own decisions.

My getting pregnant had absolutely nothing to do with my parents. It was me who had sex. And you know what? They rose to the challenge and helped me. I think that speaks miles about their character. I would image that Sarah Palin's situation is probably no different.

While I agree with you in principle, the fact of the matter is that, right or wrong, everything that a public servant's children do reflects directly on their parents and their credibility. Anyone remember the field day the press had about Bush's wild children? Or Reagan's gay son? At least Chelsea Clinton had the sense to stay in her shoes and just be known for looking semi-pretty through her dad's career.

Regardless of the reasons for why little Bristol has gotten into this situation, regardless of whether it was an attempt on her part to act out against her parents or because she felt she was mature enough to handle it or because she was just really, really horny, it looks catastrophically bad for a politician running on a family values and abstinence ticket to have her teenage daughter get knocked up out of wedlock. They'll spin the hell out of it for the rest of the campaign, but it is a messy blast to her credibility that Sarah Palin -- and by extension, John McCain -- didn't need.

Oh, and I'll also throw my hat into the "it's frickin' hilarious" ring.
