Midwife attacked by man in hood

A community midwife has been attacked as she was leaving a block flats on a Peterborough estate.

The midwife, in her 20s, had just dealt with the birth of a baby on the Welland Estate when the incident happened.

As she left a block of flats, which was protected by a security door code, she was knocked to the ground by a man in a hooded top, a police spokesman said.

As she lay semi-unconscious in the stairwell her attacker stole her medical bag and ran away.

Peterborough and Stamford Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said it was taking the incident extremely seriously and will be issuing every midwife with an attack alarm as a priority.

Policemen walk the streets in pairs and yet us health professionals work alone... this happened Saturday at 4.15p.m. I work the twilight shift and admit to becoming nervous last night walking around an estate in the dark whose numbering system was left much to be desired... I didn't hear about this report until I eventually reached my destination.

I have invested in a torch/personal alarm and hope to God I never have cause to use it. When I joined the community my line manager made the statement that the uniform is like an invisible shield.... well maybe 20 years ago, but not now
