A person doesn't need to pass a typing or spelling test in order to have an educated opinion on a subject. If you can not look beyond a small error then honestly who can take you seriously? We all know you are quite educated in grammar and spelling. We know you have a degree in it, and are quite well versed in the proper usage of words and phrases. This however does not make you the only competent person of the group because you rarely mistype or misspell. (Although it has happened before, and I don't recall anyone thinking you were incompetent on the subject.)

I didn't say uneducated, you did. Let's be clear on that first. Second, as has been noted repeatedly on this board, a lack of skill in one area does not automatically imply a lack of skill in other areas. That is a big, and illogical, leap. Third, while a doctor mixing up their "two's" might not be a big deal, mixing up the spelling (or dosage) of prescriptions certainly would -- it might kill someone. I operate on the assumption that the doctors you speak of take extra care to ensure their 'scripts do not have spelling errors on them. Finally, rest assured that any doctor trying to get a paper published will take the time to ensure it is written in precise, unambiguous, grammatically correct, spelling-error-free language.

If a doctor misspelled "Meibomian Cyst" on a chart, or notation, it certainly wouldn't make him wrong in his diagnosis. There is a difference in prescribing the wrong meds, or the wrong dosage of meds, and I would hope you would know this. Spelling it Meybomian cyst, or Mybomian cyst doesn't make his treatment for the cyst questionable. If you believe it does, then I hope you bring grammar and spelling tests with you to your free health care appointments in Canada.

That definition really doesn't apply in any meaningful way to anything that goes on around here. There is no deliberative body, there is no parliamentary procedure, the discussion is not regulated and the sides are certainly not matched. Having said all that, typical face-to-face communication, such as the debate noted in your definition, can include as much as 93 percent non-verbal cues.

We are having a discussion here, and there are two sides, perhaps even three. those who agree with Ian, those who don't, and those who think the whole idea is just whacked. The fact remains, it is a discussion, and not a English Class. How about we keep the discussions going, and quit focusing on the spelling, and grammar behind it?


BTW- you can take whichever study you found done at UCLA, Harvard, Yale, Baylor, or whereever, and use it wherever you want and whenever you want. This is an online forum. This not a Lincoln Douglas Debate, this is not a courtroom, nor a classroom. This is an online chat forum. Let's try to be respectful of every member posting here, especially those brave enough for adding their two cents in the pit.

It is a shame that because someone fails to spell something correctly, or type it correctly, you dismiss whatever it is they have to say because you will "rarely" take them seriously. I wonder how many people in history had the same closed mindedness you have when reading something of one of the following individuals.
