I remember using crayons out of big plastic boxes that everyone shard; where the hell did those come from?

Isn't involuntary sharing kind of like paying taxes? lol

I think that public schools must vary around the country, Doug.
I taught at a K-5 elementary school in FL for two years, and the students didn't have to bring anything to school.
All they had to do was show up in their uniforms (white shirt, khaki pants) and if they didn't they were sent to the principal's office
and he would reprimand them and give 'em a spare uniform to wear for the day. They received free breakfasts, snacks, lunches, and after school care..
Paper, pens, pencils, crayons... everything... was provided by the school system. And I repeat.... this was a PUBLIC school.

The burning question is Susan:

That is definitely some tax dollars at work! Was this an expectionally rich area, poor area, or neither?

actually the school supplies are such a small percentage of a district's budget that it should not be too difficult to actually provide these things for the students. one less administrator should about cover it.

Palm Beach County... so the answer is both! It's a rich area, but this was an inner city school.
