Exactly!

WRONG!!! Alcohol is legalized because it is big business. Period.

Alcohol and tobacco are far more harmful and addictive than marijuana. Alcohol users are more likely to be unruly and violent, while marijuana users are pleasant and easy going.
People who over-use marijuana can usually walk away with very little effect, while over-users of alcohol and cigarettes face excruciating detox periods if they try to quit.

Legalize it, farm it, regulate it, tax it. Use the money to go after the serious and violent criminals. If pot users had a legal source, it would dry up the illegal pot market for the drug cartels.
I realize that doesn't solve the meth or crack or coke issues, but those are a whole different ballgame.

Sorry, I didn't mean for it to sound like it is legalized because it does less damage it was simply an after thought. *slaps own hand for bad phrasing*

Legalize and control all drugs. Take the power away from thugs and gangsters and give it to the government. Wait - that didn't come out right...

Yes, I have drunk alcohol but lets be realistic... how much research has been done on drugs and alcohol... and what is the bigger killer. Which one ruins the most lives? I hear more stories about drug users stealing or committing crimes to raise the money to feed their habits than those who want a drink.

Alcohol is legalized for a reason... it does not do the same amount of damage that drugs do.

I don't smoke and I wish it was banned as for food, we as part of the Western society do not appreciate food; we take it for granted. still need to eat it to survive so I don't think you can put that in the same class as cigarettes, drugs and alcohol.
Statistically, alcohol ruins more lives because it kills more people, and if you include heart disease, strokes, and heart attacks, many due to poor diet and exercise, then drugs claim relatively few lives!

Perhaps unhealthy food should be illegal; imagine a society where you had to go underground to get a Big Mac.

I think that a drug like marijuana should be legal; something like Meth? Never legal. But I don't think we'll ever see it in US.

Legalize all the drugs and tax the bejeesus out of them, then invest that money into medical programs.

In the grand scheme of things, the hard drugs do not harm or kill many people (thanks for the stats, Susan). Compared to smoking, which is deadlier than asbestos exposure, but nevertheless legal, the death rate is stunningly low. Now, I happen to have little sympathy for smokers who get cancer and die, because they have chosen to commit suicide in that fashion. Likewise, I have little sympathy for people who would choose to kill themselves with other drugs (and I include alcohol in "other drugs"). But since they're going to do it anyway, why let criminals profit and turn our streets into war zones while fighting for territory? Why not legalize everything, control it effectively, and thereby cripple the criminal element's power? As has already been noted, the current system doesn't work, so what possible reason would there be to not entertain a different, more progressive approach?

Oh, and for the record, morphine is some good shit, although it did make me a little sick to my stomach.

P.S. Hey Mike, didn't I read something recently about California outlawing McDonalds? Is that the society you're trying to imagine?
