I had to vote no on ALL drugs. I think drugs (including alcohol) cause alot of problems emotionally, physically, and socially. I will say between alcohol and marijuana I would much rather see marijuana legal. I do not smoke it and I very seldom ever drink, but I can not stand to be around a drunk. At least if you are high you are mellow. I would even like to see tobacco illegal, maybe then I could quit.

I will agree with Doug that our prison system spends a ridiculous amount of time and money dealing with recreational drug users and non-violent criminals in general. The whole 'war on drugs' is fundamentally flawed anyway unless the solutions are directed towards the source countries. By the time the drugs are inside our borders, it's too late.

On an unrelated note, one could make the argument that marijuana isn't even a drug. Hardcore drugs like heroin and crack have to go through like 57 steps to be processed and created. Even the drugs of alcohol and tobacco need small amounts of human refinement to come to be. Marijuana is created by God and left the way in came into this world, much like a fruit or vegetable. If the substance involves no human meddling at all, is it really a drug?

Under which definition?

I guess #2a?

I'm also not sure if it is classified as a narcotic. I failed out of organic chemistry WAY before we got to that.

Pharmacology of Marijuana

Quote:
Marijuana is the term used to describe the leaves and flowering tops of the Cannabis sativa plant. Like other herbal medicines, the Cannabis plant plays host to a number of chemicals. The plant houses approximately 460 known compounds. Sixty of these are unique to the Cannabis plant and are called cannabinoids. The primary psychoactive cannabinoid is delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol or THC. Chemically the cannabinoids are classed as terpenoid (terpene-like), these compounds occur as essential oils within many plants and some are involved in vitamin, steroid and pigment formation. Because of THC’s high lipid solubility, it was previously thought that THC affected cells by interacting with the lipid components of the cell membrane.
I was thinking or rather not ... about the pharmacology side of it and ermmm thinking well since it isn't a synthetic substance then surely it comes outside of pharmacology. oops then a brain cell kicked in when I realised formulae exist not just in man-made matter, consider water woman!!! Hence I googled and the result is above and I have to agree with you Greg but not just that particular part of the definition. 2 c has to be a great contender as it affects the mental functioning and though I cannot be sure very likely affects metabolism and a host of other bodily functions. (The article linked does state a couple of things).
