Having been a victem of murder ( my sister was murdered in 1990 ) I guess I would have a stronger opinion for Capital Punishmant. But my views were strongly for Capital punishment even befoe my sister died.
Why should we pay to keep these people alive??????
Why do they deserve a second chance?????
When this asshole gets out of prison....my sister will still be in the ground....no second chance there!!

I'm sorry to hear that, some people in this world are just straight-up sick. Unfortunately, I too had something similar happen in college - one of my friends was killed in a hit-and-run.

And I could not agree with you more - I am 100% for the Death Penalty. I am though for DNA testing to prove guilt/innocence. But I feel that cold-blooded killers should have NO rights. IMHO, if you take a life, you do not deserve life.

What about discussing forms of capital punishment. Are there any states in the USA that do not have capital punishment? What state is "Death Row" in, or is "it" in all states that have capital punishment. What dictates the form used?
All the states which perform Capital Punishments have a "death row". The only states/US territories which do not perform Capital Punishment are:

Alaska, Hawaii, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, North Dakota, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin, District of Columbia, American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and U.S. Virgin Islands.

Crimes subject to the death penalty vary by jurisdiction. All jurisdictions that use capital punishment designate the highest grade of murder a capital crime, although most jurisdictions require aggravating circumstances. Treason is a capital offense in several jurisdictions.

Other capital crimes include: the use of a weapon of mass destruction resulting in death, espionage, terrorism, certain violations of the Geneva Conventions that result in the death of one or more persons, and treason at the federal level; aggravated rape in Louisiana, Florida, and Oklahoma; extortionate kidnapping in Oklahoma; aggravated kidnapping in Georgia, Idaho, Kentucky and South Carolina; aircraft hijacking in Alabama; drug trafficking resulting in a person's death in Connecticut; train wrecking which leads to a person's death, and perjury which leads to a person's death in California. (I also heard NOT marrying a first cousin in Kentucky is a capital crime but I think that's just a rumor.)

Currently lethal injection is the method used or allowed in 35 of the 36 states which allow the death penalty. Nebraska requires electrocution, although in 2008 the state supreme court ruled that this method is unconstitutional. Other states also allow electrocution, gas chambers, hanging and the firing squad. From 1976 to October 18, 2008 there were 1,125 executions, of which 954 were by lethal injection, 155 by electrocution, 11 by gas chamber, 3 by hanging, and 2 by firing squad.

The use of lethal injection has almost become standard. From June 2000 to July 20, 2006, only 6 out of 387 executions have been by a different method. The last execution by any other method was the use of the electric chair on June 20, 2008 when James Earl Reed was executed in South Carolina. The last use of the gas chamber occurred on March 3, 1999 when Walter LaGrand was executed in Arizona, the last use of hanging was on 25 January 1996 when Delaware hanged Billy Bailey and the firing squad was also last used in 1996 when John Albert Taylor was shot in Utah on January 26.

I think that just about covers it.

Frankly, I'm shocked that practically everyone here (so far) is FOR the Death Penalty...

Would you know whether there are a higher proportion of murders pro rata of population in these States compared to those with capital punishment? I guess what I am asking is whether you believe that the death penalty actually acts as a deterrent.

Interesting stats... I must admit I'd hate to graph them all to have a thorough comparison rather than just looking at the averages.

I firmly believe in capital punishment. Why keep them locked up. wasting tax payers money, and have them set on there ass, watching tv, working out, and eating three meals a day. The lesser crimes, they let those go, give them a warning, pat them on the back, and say, now be good, I don't want to see u back here. Why, because there is not enough jails and pens to hold them all.

Here's a site with graphs wheeeeeeee

Deterrence: States Without the Death Penalty Have Had Consistently Lower Murder Rates | Death Penalty Information Center

I'm sceptical tho.... is this site for the abolition of the death penalty? We all know stats can be manipulated.
