Bush: Fortune Cookie Leadership?
Bush: Fortune Cookie Leadership?
Some compared it to an inscrutable Eastern mantra; others suggested it was closer to fortune cookie philosophy. Either way, the "way forward" is how President Bush looked at both Congressional Democrats and North Korea's government today. Do you think he's signaling at least some compromise on the budget?
For weeks, President George W. Bush has demanded that Congressional Democrats send him the war budget he wants, or send him a bill so he can veto it and get on with the process of governing.
But President Bush's tone appeared to have changed, at least slightly, on Friday. He appeared apologetic as he said, "I'm sorry it's come to this," describing his response to the budget bill which Democrats pushed through Congress on Thursday.
"In other words," the president went on, "I'm sorry that we've, you know, had this -- you know, the issue evolved the way it has; but nevertheless, it is what it is and it'll be vetoed and my veto will be sustained."
He appeared to hold out hope of some form of compromise or other resolution, however, as he continued by saying that, "...the other question is the way forward and my suggestion is that -- and I invite the leaders of the House and the Senate, both parties, to come down, you know, soon after my veto so we can discuss a way forward."
However, President Bush concluded by repeating his oft-stated threat, warning that, "And if the Congress wants to test my will as to whether or not I'll accept a timetable for withdrawal, I won't accept one."
Interestingly, President Bush chose the same words in addressing North Korea's enigmatic dictator Kim Jong-il today, saying that "I think it's wise to show the North Korean leader as well that there's a better way forward."
What do you think the "way forward" is likely to be for Congress -- and for North Korea? Is it likely to be "my way or the highway?"
