All in good fun of course.
As I got older of course some things changed, but some things stayed the same. I STILL love Halloween, I still love making or putting together my own costume... Actually the only thing that's really changed is my taste in candy...
See, that first year I was at my place (just six short blocks from where I grew up, and where Halloween used to be HUGE) I bought LOADS of standard, garden variety, candy from the grocery store. I must have bought about 30 pounds ... I was actually really looking forward to being the person giving out the candy, and I planed to be the best house in the neighborhood, since I remember how great a really good "score" made me feel when I was a kid. (that and I remember how damn hard it is to scrape Ivory soap, melted with lighter fluid, off windows)
The night arrived, I was in costume with 30 pounds of candy and ready to get into the swing of things....
And, I got just a handful of trick or treaters all night...
Not being big on cheap chocolate and the other garden variety sweets I loved as a kid anymore, most of it got thrown out.
The same thing happened the next year as well... I got all excited, decorated the house, double checked that the porch light was burning bright, carved and put out a jack o lantern, had on my costume for the night, etc, etc, etc.... Another 30 pounds of candy down the drain... (actually, now that I think about it, that year my ex ate most of it ... in a matter of two weeks, with the expected results... I'm not sure which year I was more pissed about actually ... but that's a different story...)
In the last two years I've come up with a much more successful system.
I buy smaller batches of ONLY the chocolate that I actually like. On the 30th I make sure I get a haircut, manicure, etc. Then, on Halloween, around 4pm, I start getting ready like I was about to get married... I shower, shave, etc., and get dressed in my best dark suit, with a nice red shirt, a black tie, I make sure I look and smell great before I answer the door, even though this means getting undressed and then into costume at 10pm when it's time for me to hit the bar's Halloween party. (this year I'm going to the bar as Hunter S. Thompson)
ANYWAYS....
I STILL only get a handful of trick or treaters each Halloween, but almost every trick or treater is accompanied by a single Mom or two... Many of them are rather attractive...
And when I answer MY door, there I stand in a suit and tie, perfectly pressed, dressed, and groomed ... holding a crystal bowl of Godiva individuals and Dove miniatures (and a stack of business cards. You know, just in case they ever have a locksmithing emergency ... and since we're neighbors and all...)
Like I said, I STILL love Halloween.... it's mostly just my taste in candy that's changed...
